Chewton Primary is a small primary school , 5 kms east of Castlemaine, Victoria. Our classrooms are in a heritage school building surrounded by landscaped gardens and creative play spaces. Children have access to asphalt areas, an artificial turf oval, adventure play equipment and areas of bush where they can explore and build cubbies. We have recently upgraded our library and music/ art space to create a modern theme while retaining the character of our building.
We are committed to creating as sustainable environment for the future and have gained the highest possible recognition for our achievements gaining our 5th star from Sustainability Victoria via the schools ResourseSmart initiative.
The outdoor environment is critical to our programs with our school garden produce being used to make healthy meals an snacks. We regularly use our wood fired pizza oven for school and community occasions.
With a current enrollment of 75 children we are able to run 4 classes. The curriculum is focused on numeracy and literacy skills but includes; PE, music, art, intervention, library, performing arts, LOTE Chinese(Mandarin), STEM programs and integrated inquiry learning. Computing resources are used to complement learning with 1:1 computer access in grades 3-6 and shared access in the lower grades.
The close family atmosphere, in a supportive community environment encourages children to be expressive, confident and secure. Children are encouraged to be individuals.
Small numbers mean whole school activities are possible and we share in camps and extra-curricula activities with like sized schools in the district. Excursions to complement our programs such as visits to museums, arts events and performances are encouraged and supported. Participation in local events and local organizations encourages children to think of themselves as part of a wider community. The school hosts a weekly free playgroup for 0-5 year olds. Family day care is available 2 afternoons a week. Breakfast is provided free of charge on 2 mornings with supplies available if required, on other days of the week.
We are a Respectful Relationships School.
In the classroom, children will learn problem-solving skills, to develop empathy, support their own wellbeing and build healthy relationships with others. The initiative will also provide resources to best support children and staff who are affected by family violence.
When children build positive relationships with their teachers and peers they feel safer and happier at school, are more resilient and have positive social attitudes. Positive relationships also increase a child’s sense of social connectedness and belonging which can result in better health and academic outcomes.
As principal of Chewton Primary School, I invite you to come and talk to parents, staff and students as you make the important decision as to where to enroll your child.
I am committed to small school education and have a strong belief in what we have to offer at our school. Our children come as individuals but work as a united group where we learn, play and share together. The whole school is our family and supports the values of our community. Our teachers are excellently placed to raise the level of our students as we know them all so well. Small schools are not everyone's first choice however I encourage you to see what we have to offer and learn more about our programs and vision.
